Last night was the Currituck Chamber of Commerce's annual member meeting and awards dinner. This is the second year that I've had the honor to attend this wonderful event as a part of photographing the chamber's major events. I have to say that photographing these events for the chamber is something that I began doing somewhat reluctantly. You see, events just aren't my thing! As an introvert, I find it difficult to relax. And as for photography, it's no secret that portraits are what I enjoy most for the control I have in creating them. Events? Well, I have very little, if any, control!
But you know what? It turns out that I love chamber events! I actually look forward to seeing the many fabulous people and members. And Josh, the chamber president, helps me to feel like I have some sort of control - at least as much as possible at an event. ;)
I arrived at the venue, Black Tartan Tap Room, about an hour before the event was to begin in order to set up for the group photo of the award recipients. This was an entirely new venue for me, and as we looked around at options, I was a little worried to find that the best option was to do the group photo outside. No biggie, right? No, except that we wouldn't know who the winners were until it was dark! We found a great space on the back porch - not too far for everyone to walk in the dark. I put everything in place as best I could, but couldn't get the final setup and settings as it was still light out - my settings would be different once it was dark.
I returned inside to determine where I would sit in order to get the individual shots of each award recipient as Josh was giving it. I had no column to hide behind as I did last year! LOL I was a hot mess, literally, as the night progressed, but it was a lovely evening, and it was great to see so many enjoying it. Dinner was served (it was yummy!), and I did my best to eat as quickly as possible as I always do at events. Josh was trying to determine the best time to begin with the awards and waited until I was ready. Gotta love him - he seriously makes my job so easy!
As Josh was describing the first award recipient, I admit that I was only half paying attention, as I was going over everything in my mind for what I had to do. And I had a tummy ache from eating so fast! LOL And then I realized that it was me! I had to go up there!! (Can anyone tell me what was said??)
Several people came up to me over the course of the rest of the evening, saying that they were waiting for my selfie! So no, I was not able to get a shot of Josh handing me the award, and I was a hot mess last night anyway! LOL Seriously, I'm scared to look at the group photo! (Many thanks to "my assistant", Kristi for help with that last night since I had to be in it!) So here you go - two selfies from this morning. And obviously, selfies just aren't my thing!
I would like to take this opportunity to share one of the many things I love about my business. As a business owner, I make my own schedule. I am in the studio most weekdays 10:00-4:00. Most sessions and client meetings are in the evenings and on weekends (although I do love it when clients are available during studio hours). I shift my hours around as needed. Community involvement and giving back is a very necessary part of MKP! Therefore, I will always make time for it. It is one of the things I looked forward to most when considering my own business!
To all of the award recipients, congratulations! Images will be available sometime next week....after I'm able to get over the shock of last night. :) And hopefully they will look better than these selfies. ;)
