Headshots are not just for professionals anymore! We see headshots of everyday people as we browse social media. What does your profile picture say about you?
Have you considered hiring a professional photographer? A professional can help to create the best for you, with professional lighting and posing. There are, however, some things you can do to ensure a great headshot is created.
Here are some suggestions to put your best face forward for your next head shot portrait!
Know your intentions.
What will your headshots be used for? Will you need portrait or landscape orientated images? Any particular colors? Do you prefer something more traditional and formal, or more relaxed and editorial? Natural light or studio? Consider your audience and intended use. For instance, if you will be using your image on your website, we like to coordinate with the colors on your site. Do you need an image to fit something in particular, such as a business card? Are you looking for images that convey confidence and power or warmth and friendliness?
Do you wear glasses?
If so, contact your optician and borrow a pair of empty frames for the day of your session. We can always work to minimize glare of course, but there is still refraction.
Hydrate your skin.
In order to best prepare your skin, please refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine for about a week prior to your session. Drink plenty of water to hydrate! Avoid sun exposure, which can make you looked tired and irritate your skin. Get plenty of sleep to avoid dark circles under your eyes. Women should have a fresh application of daytime makeup. Avoid sparkly or shimmering makeup of any type, including bronzers, as it is not flattering when the camera picks up on the reflectiveness. Matte is best. Be sure to bring, at a minimum, your powder and lipstick with you to your session! Men may want to utilize lip balm. Facial blotting cloths are a great idea to consider, especially for those with oily skin.
Prep your hair.
Have your hair cut a week or two prior to your session. Ladies, leave your hair down, rather than pulled up or back. Your roots will show so have them touched up. You may also want to consider a deep conditioning treatment if you are prone to flyaways. Men, a clean-shaven face is best unless of course you have a beard. Prepare facial hair by trimming, plucking, or waxing. Take into consideration that some procedures leave skin irritated and should therefore be scheduled in advance.
Consider your teeth for a winning smile.
Avoid anything that may stain your teeth the day of your session. You may also want to consider teeth bleaching in advance of your session. And don't forget to floss!
What will you wear?
You’ll want to wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. Be sure your clothes fit properly and are properly pressed. Avoid busy patterns and large stripes; solid colors are often best. Consider color harmony and how the colors you wear affect your eyes and skin tones. Mid tones are usually best. Avoid flesh tones as they will blend with your skin. Bring a few options with you and your photographer will help you choose what is best for you and your headshots.
For women consider:
Dark jacket over a simple silk top or blouse.
Avoid bold patterns on your jacket or blouse.
Or opt for a sweater or simple top; long sleeves are best.
Consider how the neckline affects your face. A modest v-neck is often flattering as it elongates the neck.
Simple jewelry, matching earrings and necklace are ideal, keeping the viewer’s attention on your face. Statement jewelry will quickly date your images.
Earrings no larger than your thumbnail or small hoops.
For men consider:
Dress shirt, light blue is often ideal.
Simple tie with conservative patterns, avoid broad stripes.
Dark suit coat or sports jacket. Small pinstripe is fine.
Communicate with your photographer.
A professional photographer has experience with this and is there to help! Do you have any concerns? Also, let your photographer know what your images will be used for and what you are trying to convey with your images. (Going back to number one, above.)
